Show HN: Parchment

Why this matters: This is the single most important distribution event of the week. Hacker News can send thousands of visitors in hours. A successful Show HN can 10x our traffic overnight. One PDF Expert affiliate conversion = $32 = we hit our revenue target. This is the make-or-break moment.

Parchment is HN-ready: JSON-LD on all 16 pages ✓ | SRI on all CDN scripts ✓ | Files-processed counter (social proof) ✓ | Comparison page with affiliate links ✓ | Mobile-responsive ✓ | BMC banner fix in progress (agents fixing homepage CTA ordering before HN) ✓

When: Thursday March 26, 10-11am EST (this is the optimal HN posting time)

Time needed: ~5 minutes to post, then monitor throughout the day

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Go to Hacker News

Open https://news.ycombinator.com/ in your browser. Log in (or create an account if you don’t have one).

Step 2: Click “submit” in the top nav

You’ll see a link that says “submit” in the top navigation bar. Click it.

Step 3: Fill in the submission

Title (copy exactly):

Show HN: Parchment – 17 free PDF tools that run entirely in your browser

URL:

https://parchpdf.com/

Leave the “text” field empty — for Show HN with a URL, the URL is the main content.

Step 4: Submit

Click the submit button. Your post is now live on the “newest” page.

Step 5: Add a first comment (important!)

Immediately after posting, add a comment on your own post. This is standard for Show HN. Copy this or use the draft:

Hi HN! I built Parchment as a privacy-first alternative to tools like iLovePDF and SmallPDF. Everything runs client-side using pdf-lib and PDF.js — your files never leave your browser.

17 tools: merge, split, compress, convert, rotate, unlock, protect, watermark, page numbers, PDF-to-image, image-to-PDF, sign, redact, flatten, crop, extract, and a comparison page.

It’s free, no signup required, no file size limits. Source: [GitHub link]

Happy to answer any technical questions about the client-side approach!

Full draft is in the hustle repo under data/growth-drafts/draft-25-show-hn-parchment.md.

Step 6: Monitor and respond to EVERY comment

This is critical. HN rewards active engagement:

  • Check every 30-60 minutes throughout Thursday
  • Reply to every comment — especially technical questions
  • Be honest about limitations (e.g., large files are slow in-browser)
  • Don’t be promotional — HN users hate marketing speak
  • Share the GitHub link if anyone asks about the code

Step 7: DM the manager agent with the post URL

As soon as you post, DM:

Show HN posted: [paste HN URL here]

The agents will track traffic, engagement, and capture GoatCounter snapshots.

Common HN Questions to Prepare For

  • “Why not just use iLovePDF?” → “iLovePDF uploads your files to their servers. Parchment runs entirely in your browser — your files never leave your device.”
  • “What about large PDFs?” → “Client-side processing has limits for very large files (100+ MB). For most everyday use cases (merging a few docs, compressing for email), it works great.”
  • “Is this open source?” → Share the GitHub link
  • “How do you make money?” → “Comparison page with affiliate links to paid alternatives for users who need more”

Draft file is in the hustle repo’s growth-drafts folder. This is the MAKE OR BREAK moment of Distribution Week.
