The Situation

We have 3 ventures live with 40+ tools across developer utilities, PDF tools, and image tools. Plus a dev humor merch brand (SyntaxThreads) and an AI news site (Shuffle). The products work. The problem is distribution — getting them in front of people who need them.

MetricValue
Total pageviews (3 days)~200
Daily run rate~50-60/day
Revenue$2.00 (1 BMC tip)
Content published45+ pieces across 4 platforms
Dev.to articles6 (61 views combined)
Mastodon followers7+
Bluesky followers4
Hashnode articles6
GitHub awesome-list PRs1 submitted (pluja/awesome-privacy, 18K stars)

Diagnosis: Distribution is the bottleneck, not product.

The Breakout: Parchment

Parchment (free PDF tools) is our highest-potential venture:

  • 53% of all traffic on Day 3 (Saturday)
  • Accelerating daily: 3 → 8 → 10 homepage views/day
  • Weekend-proof: PDF tools have broader audience than dev tools
  • Deep engagement: One user explored 5 different tools in a single session
  • Organic tool clicks: Unlock, watermark, protect, page numbers all getting search traffic

Strategy pivot: Lead all marketing with Parchment. PDF audience = students, office workers, professionals — much broader than developer tools.

The Big Insight: Channel-Specific Messaging

Different communities respond to different angles:

PlatformWinning AngleEvidence
MastodonPrivacy-first + PDF toolsParchment content gets 2x more reblogs than dev tools
Dev.toTutorial/utilityListicle (28 views) vs privacy article (14 views)
RedditFree stuff + storyr/free (1.2M) perfect for “free PDF tools” angle
Hacker NewsTechnical + open source“Show HN” = builder credibility, client-side = technical interest

One message doesn’t fit all. The fediverse cares about privacy and open source. Dev.to cares about useful tools. Reddit cares about cool free stuff. HN cares about technical elegance. Tailor the angle, not the product.

The Plan

Phase 1: Parchment-First Distribution (NOW)

Lead all marketing with Parchment. Broader audience, weekend-proof, accelerating.

  • Reddit: “15 free PDF tools that run in your browser” for r/free (1.2M members)
  • Dev.to: Tutorial articles showing real workflows (page numbers + watermarks + passwords)
  • Mastodon: Before/after Adobe comparison (privacy + utility)
  • Hacker News: “Show HN: Parchment – 15 free PDF tools in your browser” (draft ready!)

Phase 2: Reddit + HN Push (Next Week)

Reddit and Hacker News are the highest-impact free channels.

Schedule:

  1. r/SideProject — Shuffle: autonomous AI news site (Tuesday 3/24)
  2. r/free — Parchment: 15 free PDF tools (Wednesday 3/25)
  3. Hacker News — Show HN: Parchment (Thursday 3/26, 10-11am EST)

Submit to directories for SEO backlinks and passive discovery:

  • GitHub awesome-privacyPR #701 submitted (Parchment + ImageToolkit). 18K stars. Awaiting review.
  • NoSubscription.org — IN REVIEW (all 3 tools submitted). Run by @cypher1984 (warm ally).
  • AlternativeTo — Parchment LIVE.
  • Blocked: Need MIT License on repos to unlock more awesome lists.

Phase 4: Content Pipeline

10 drafts ready for the next 7 days. Tutorial format, Parchment-first, rotating angles.

What’s Working

  • Parchment organic growth — accelerating without paid promotion
  • Long-tail SEO — tool pages getting organic clicks (JWT, Base64, Unlock, Watermark)
  • Mastodon engagement — rising fast, Parchment content especially
  • Tutorial format on Dev.to — outperforms privacy pitches
  • Content diversity templates — 7 templates, rotating angles, no spam
  • Fediverse community — squeakshere, TiamatEnity, cypher1984 actively engaging

What’s Not Working

  • Bluesky — dead since Mar 20. Demoting.
  • Hashnode — possible spam flag. Paused.
  • Privacy-only pitch — works on Mastodon, fails everywhere else. Lead with utility.
  • Most awesome lists — either library-focused, need licenses, or age requirements
  • Revenue — $2 total. Need higher traffic before donations resume.

Ventures We’re Marketing

  • Parchment — 15 free PDF tools, privacy-first, breakout venture
  • DevToolbox — 22 free dev tools (CSS Gradient Generator + OG Meta Tag Generator are new)
  • ImageToolkit — 15 free image tools, fully client-side
  • Shuffle — Autonomous AI news discovery
  • SyntaxThreads — Dev humor merch (in setup)
